breath taking - 2017    - relational installation

Among the nomadic peoples of the

Kalahari Basin, Namibia, expectant

mothers make great efforts, often walking

many miles, to ensure their babies are

born exactly where they were conceived.

Believing that conception occurs as a

breath is exhaled at the point of orgasm,

they consider this breath sacred, as the

giver of life.

They believe it resides, held in that place,

waiting to become the first breath taken by

their new born baby as it enters the world.

window text, inflated paper bags

Picture
exploring the power of words:

believing what we read affects what we see - below the text on the window, twelve simple white paper bags sit innocuously on the sill -

Picture
it isn't easy to define how or why the value of the bags is changed by the veracity of the text, but it undoubtedly is -

empty bags were taken home by a few complicit collaborators the evening prior to this exhibition - they were returned inflated and placed in the space as contributions -

the bags contain whatever we believe they contain
